Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium: What You Need to Know
Share
When choosing a mushroom extract, the terms “fruiting body” and “mycelium” can be confusing. Both are parts of the mushroom organism, but they are not equal in terms of potency, purity, or bioactive compound levels.
AbsoluteFungi uses fruiting-body-only extracts, and here’s why.
What “Fruiting Body Only” Means — And Why It Matters
The fruiting body is the mature mushroom — the part traditionally used in herbal medicine and the part where most of the proven active compounds are concentrated.
Research shows that fruiting bodies contain:
· Significantly higher beta-glucan levels
· Richer concentrations of key bioactive compounds
· Naturally low starch content (important for purity)
Many of the benefits linked to mushrooms — such as immune support, cognitive function, and antioxidant protection — are associated primarily with compounds found in the fruiting body [1,2].
 What “Mycelium Only” Means
Mycelium is the underground, root-like network of the mushroom.
It contains its own useful compounds, but most commercial mycelium products are grown on grains such as rice, oats, or sorghum.
This leads to two issues:
1. Dilution: Mycelium grown on grain often contains large amounts of starch from the substrate
2. Lower beta-glucan content: These products frequently show lower levels of the compounds customers are looking for
Studies have shown that mycelium-on-grain supplements may contain more grain residues than actual mushroom compounds, leading to weaker extracts compared to fruiting-body-only products [3].
⭐ Why AbsoluteFungi Uses Fruiting-Body Only Extracts
We choose fruiting bodies exclusively because they contain the highest levels of the compounds supported by scientific research, including:
· Beta-glucans (immune-active polysaccharides)
· Terpenoids (such as hericenones in Lion’s Mane)
· Antioxidants
· Mushroom-specific secondary metabolites
These are the compounds responsible for the benefits people seek in Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps.
Using the fruiting body allows us to ensure:
✔ Higher potency
✔ Lower starch content
✔ More reliable, research-backed compounds
✔ Better extraction efficiency
✔ More predictable product quality
With our dual extraction process, we capture a broad range of both water-soluble and alcohol-soluble compounds — maximising potency while keeping the extract alcohol-free.
Adding Kakadu Plum completes the formulation by supporting antioxidant absorption and natural bioavailability.
